Detalhes do Pedal:

A idéia dessa aventura, realizada com meu grande camarada Diego, surgiu quando ele leu que a Serra Paraty-Cunha era a serra mais difícil do estado do Rio. Então, pra esquentar as pernas antes da subida, decidimos sair de Ubatuba (SP) e viajar  um pouco pela Rio Santos BR-101.

A Rio-Santos (BR 101) é um dos meus lugares preferidos para pedalar no Brasil, pois alterna morros, montanhas com serras e lindos visuais das praias.  Decidimos encarar a subida mais difícil e a mais longa do Rio (mais de 1.400 metros de ascensão), mas incluímos um trecho de 80km da Rio-Santos entre Ubatuba e Paraty. 

Pegamos um ônibus às 23h no Rio e chegamos em Ubatuba às 4h.  Esperamos em um posto Ipiranga na própria BR-101 até ás 6h, para começarmos a aventura com a luz do dia.  Os quase 80km da Rio-Santos, entre Ubatuba-Paraty são uma delícia para pedalar, com morros curtos e visuais lindíssimos.  A única parte um pouco mais puxada é nos últimos 6km antes de chegar no Rio, pois é subida quase o tempo todo, mas logo depois encaramos uma descida deliciosa que nos leva quase até Paraty.

- Description of Terrain:  In the urban part, it´s mostly regular road in decent condition, which lasted for about 65km. In the highway, we rode on pretty well conditioned shoulder almost the entire way. On some climbs, the shoulder gives way to a second lane, so we had to ride on the side of the road, which was also in good condition.

- Description of Terrain:  The entire ride take place on Rio-Santos, which offers good shoulder throughout most of the route. In some parts the shoulder is not as smooth and in a few parts it is unrideable, but there is enough space on the actual road to share with cars. On every climb, the shoulder gives way to a second car lane, so keep in mind that on every ascent you will need to ride on the side of the road and expect cars to go by. Most cars respect the cyclists, but there are always a few drivers that don´t think bike belong on the roadways (so ignore and watch out for them).

Did you know:

-  Paraty was one Brazil´s major ports in the 18th century, as it was heavily used to send gold and other precious metals to Portugal during the colonization period. After a new road was built to the Rio de Janeiro port, Paraty was left behind, until around 1970, when new roads were created to cross from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro, which in turn, made Paraty one of Brazil´s most desired colonial towns.
